Project info ——————————-
This project was created with the following materials/tools:
Pine 1 x lumber
Hardboard
Hinges
Hardboard panels
Pocket screws

Episode Notes:

The whole build started out with a few pieces of standard 1x pine boards.

First I marked out and cut the pieces I would need for each shelf.

For this cabinet there are 8. Seven actual shelves and the top.

After I had the proper length cut for each one, I headed over to the table saw and ripped each piece down ¼ inch shorter than each of the sides would be to allow for the back panel later on.

Using a circular saw, I cut some off the side of each board that would be the side to bring it down to the dimension I wanted. I also cut them to length on the miter saw.

Once I had everything cut for the shell of the cabinet, I started the task of drilling all of the pocket holes. I laid these out with equal spacing so they would look somewhat nice when the cabinet was opened, especially since I wasn’t planing on filling in the holes.

After all the holes were drilled I did the most exciting part of the project. I only sanded the side opposite of the pocket holes though. It saved both time and my sanity. I also hit the front edges as well.

The next step was to mark out where each shelf would go. This is fairly quick work of you measure out each shelf and then pencil your lines on with a square.

Now that all the holes are drilled and the marks are drawn you can start screwing the shelves to the sides. I started out by attaching all the shelves to one side. After I had all of those attached, I moved what I had assembled, flipped it and sat it back down on the opposite side. Since both sides are marked the same, this makes it incredibly easy to line up.

Next, I flipped the cabinet on its face and added a ¼ inch deep rabbet around the inside edge of each side to allow it to receive the back panels.

The back panels I used were some ¼ inch thick harboard panels that I had gotten from an old building I recently helped renovate. Before nailing them down, I measured to make sure everything was square and then fastened them down with some brads.

Since these did come from an old building, I sanded down the back of the panels to remove some of the coal dust that was caked into the fibers.

I also made two pieces for the front of the cabinet that would set above and below the doors. To make them look a little nicer, I put chamfer on the edges. Then I glued and nailed them in place.

The last thing to construct was the cabinet doors. The doors I settled on were simple and were assembled with butt joints, glue and you guessed it, more pocket screws.

So they would match the top and bottom plates of the cabinet, I added the same chamfer around the outside edges of the doors, but I left the inside edges how they were.

How to Build a Raised Garden Bed with Wood – Easy (EZ) & Cheap

I’ve built a number of raised beds over the years, but so far this design is my favorite. The sides are 2 x 10’s and the top is capped off with a 2 x 4 shelf, which not only helps keep the 2 x 10’s from bowing out from the weight of the soil but also makes a great place to sit when working in the garden.

One Yard Revolution is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used.

How to make Six Easy DIY Gift Projects – Woodshop Edition

Do-it-yourself gifts that are cheap & easy! Lots of great DIY ideas to inspire you including handmade treasure boxes, hair jewelry for Mom and a tool caddie for Dad!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keF1ONA1g8M

Transcript provided for the hearing impaired:
Alright today on Repairs101 I’m going to show you a bunch of really easy Do It Yourself projects that almost anyone can do on any budget that make really great cost effective gifts.
You know, I’ve made a lot of boxes as gifts for people over the years and they’re generally really well received. I make them using mitre joints, dado joints, simple butt joints, elaborate mortise and tenons … you know, whatever.
Here’s a box I made but instead of a lid I strung a hanger across the top and drilled a three quarter inch hole for a songbird’s nesting site. If you don’t like birds you can stick a thermometer or a clock in it. I pretty much always use recycled or reclaimed materials.
I like to carve dug-out boxes in all kinds of shapes – use your creativity. This one has a snug fitting step on the lid that holds it secure. You can get a nice set of brass hinges for about five bucks or improvise like I did with this brass hinge pin.
This is an end piece of a mahogany handrail that I think will make a really nice low-profile jewellery box.
So mark out your dug-out section… set the depth on your drill press or mark the bit with a bit of tape.
I actually ran out of time before I could finish this box but here’s yet another dug-out box I made a while back.
I actually didn’t make this coaster set but I’ve got a pretty good idea how it was done.
You normally see long flat Cribbage Boards with two sets of sixty or a hundred and twenty holes. Instead I took this scrap of mahogany and made a nice Delta pattern to leapfrog your pegs around. Throw in a deck of playing cards and it’s starting to look like a pretty good gift.
Now this is my tool caddy that I cut out of a six by six western red cedar post that used to support my rear porch.
If you can get your hands on some Mammoth or Mastodon Ivory at a local lapidary shop – you’ll find it works beautifully with rasps and rifflers and it can be wet sanded down to a really fine polish.
Now I’ve found hair jewellery is a big hit with women who wear their hair long. But it takes a special kind of girl to wear a hair clip made from a Macintosh LC575.
Work glue in well with a scraper until the wood is completely saturated and use clamps to create this cutting board that I made from some old teak scraps that I rescued from the dumpster.
Wipe excess glue off with a damp rag so you don’t have to scrape and sand it off the next day.
Here I mark it on two sides so I can follow the line with the blade exactly.
A little mineral oil and it’s ready for use in the shop or in the kitchen.
Alright thanks for watching and don’t forget to subscribe!
